Big businesses aren't the only ones who need IT workers. The government is just as big, and of course it uses technology. That being said, there are plenty of legal IT jobs out there for the taking so long as you are a highly qualified individual. As you probably concluded, you need to have certain credentials in order to attain one of these amazing jobs. Of course you are going to need more than credentials. You will need to make sure that you have a clean record, or at the very least do not have any felony convictions.

In order to get into legal IT jobs you will need to make sure you have a certain skill set. In the even you are not sure what will be required, we have compiled a list that will help you. The following are a few of the skills that will be required of you should you attempt to apply for any legal IT jobs.

UNIX/Linux

In the professional world, UNIX and Linux are the two most used operating systems. They make excellent firewalls and they rarely require a reboot. In addition to that it can also be used as a server. Your operating system can be as monolithic or as multi-faceted as you want it to be. In addition to that it updates very smoothly, often times updating directly to the next version.

You will need to become proficient in these operating systems, and pursue certification in them. Because there are many different operating systems, you will need to obtain certification in the ones that are most important. Each government agency will use a different distribution, and because it is impossible to tell which one before you go in, it would be advisable to pursue certification in as many systems as possible.

Windows Operating Systems

Many offices use server variants of Windows. Legal IT jobs in these locations will of course require that you know the inner workings of the Microsoft Operating system. Believe it or not, this is not as easy as it sounds. Windows can be a very complex monster as you are no doubt going to find out. The Windows operating system can be used for file sharing, web servers, and just about any other function you could imagine. The biggest difference between Linux and Windows is compatibility and open source.

Server Software

There are a number of different pieces of server software out there for you to consider trying. In legal IT jobs, being able to manage a web server for the intranet may be required. This is definitely something to research before you decide to pursue a career. Whether it be web servers, file servers, or other general servers, you will need to know how they work.

There are many government agencies that could require the services of an IT professional, as you can probably imagine. You could end up working in a federal building, or you could work in your local government office. Legal IT work could even extend to working in a lawyer's office. There are many different avenues for legal IT work as you have probably imagined. Picking the right place to work in can be difficult, but there is an upside to working in a government institution.

These environments are usually much more laid back than others, and you will also find that there are more benefits. You will obviously be given health benefits as well as paid vacations. The great thing about the government is that they have an unlimited supply of money and will take care of their own workers. This is contrary to many other IT related positions that you could take with other companies.

So in essence, while you will have to undergo a background check, you will find that legal IT work is good IT work. Not only will it provide a solid, stable job for many years, it will take care of you long after you leave the workplace for good. Remember that benefits are often negotiable, so make sure you take advantage of this during your interview process.

On the subject of the interview process, it is important that you bring a resume, and make sure that resume is up to date beforehand. Long after you leave the interview, your potential employer will probably look over that resume to determine whether or not you are what the company is looking for. Make people underestimate the importance of the resume, so make sure that you are not one of them.
