The Elevator Pitch: Why will you enjoy this new opportunity? This is a technical leadership role where you'll work with your team to solve challenging problems in delivering a hybrid cloud Kubernetes solution. This job in particular is to work closely with engineering managers, product owners, and other engineering teams to figure out how to accelerate our rate of development and release. What is the primary need, technical challenge, and/or problem you will be responsible for?We need someone who will help us develop and ship our product faster. As such, this role requires equal parts technical and interpersonal skills. Your work will involve streamlining both our codebase and continuous integration systems, as well as streamlining the processes used by teams to collaborate.Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months you will work toward completing?Help to quadruple our release cadence within the next 6 months.Work with individual engineering teams to deduplicate and centralize their overhead (e.g. consolidate disparate CI systems, unify test reporting, parallelize work on different components).Reduce the size of our infrastructure and release engineering codebase by 15%.What type of work will you be doing? What assignments, requirements, or skills will you be performing on a regular basis? You’ll spend most of your time understanding how the various components of our product fit together with particular attention to how they’re built, tested, and compiled. You’ll also spend a decent amount of time investigating strange integration failures between components and helping the engineering teams responsible for that code work together to fix them.Work on decoupling and parallelizing the steps in our continuous integration systems and release pipeline.Work on reducing the footprint of the product and its infrastructure dependencies. Figure out ways to use our available hardware resources more efficiently.Collaborate across teams to understand what work is duplicated and centralize that duplicated effort.Build systems to help us identify what areas of the product are least robust, and work across teams to drive improvements. What is leadership like for this role? What is the structure and culture of the team like? The hiring manager for this role is Kaiting Chen who manages the infrastructure, release engineering, cloud provider interface, and external integrations teams for the Tanzu Kubernetes Grid Integrated (TKGI) product. My management style relies heavily on leveraging the diverse and varied experiences of those on my teams and encouraging independent though and out of the box thinking. I believe that my approach is due to my own nontraditional journey: I studied biomedical engineering and economics, started in software as a technical support engineer, continued on a sales engineer, came to VMware as a software engineer, and became an engineering manager over time. To this end I tend to take a hands off approach on my teams, letting them decide for themselves what to work on and the best approach to take. This role is on the TKGI release engineering team. Currently that team is composed of four engineers that work with in a very collaborative environment. The team chooses to pair program the majority of the time and tends to set their own backlog and roadmap with my general direction.#TeamTanzuCategory : Engineering and TechnologySubcategory: Software EngineeringExperience: Manager and ProfessionalFull Time/ Part Time: Full TimePosted Date: 2020-05-14VMware Company Overview: At VMware, we believe that software has the power to unlock new opportunities for people and our planet.
