invites applications for a
Photographer
in UM’s central
Marketing and Communications
office. The Photographer is responsible for sharing the breadth and depth of the vibrancy, imagination and special uniqueness of the University of Montana through photography and visual storytelling. The photographer will assist the Photography Manager primarily and will fulfill videography requests as a secondary component of the position. Overall, the photographer will maintain the integrity of the UM brand and the University’s compelling visual identity.
Reporting to the Director of Content and Creative Strategy and the Photography Manager, the Photographer will be an active, engaged participant in all phases of the University’s marketing and communication efforts, including documenting: UM’s expertise; faculty achievement and impact; UM’s robust student experience; and UM’s public impact as a flagship institution in the state of Montana. In addition to managing, capturing, and editing images for various University platforms, the photographer will serve as a back-up videographer and will assist the videography team with assignments when requested.
The Photographer will oversee the coordination and production of photos for the University that will be published in nearly every formal channel the University manages with daily deadlines and assignments. This includes print publications; content produced by the UM News Service; UM social media channels; internal communications; several newsletters; websites, marketing campaigns and UM Enrollment and Admissions publications. This Photographer will be able to deliver high-quality photos on tight and long deadlines while remaining true to the authentic picture of the institution. They will manage photo projects from start to finish, including initial contact and planning with clients, the creation of a project plan, development of a project plan and development of a project schedule, as well as the execution of the plan or the supervision of the execution of the plan.
The Photographer will provide new, creative and innovative ideas that speak to audiences of all ages. Unconventional hours, including weekends and evenings, are required this position.
The Photographer is responsible for developing and maintaining strong relationships on campus. Because this position will be in contact with diverse audiences that UM serves, this position requires confidentiality, tact, sensitivity and professionalism.
Upon completion of training, the incumbent will have developed a working knowledge of:
UM processes regarding branding, marketing and outreach
UM brand guidelines
Required Skills
Extensive knowledge of Nikon photography equipment.
Proficient in studio and off camera lighting
Proven ability to work well with others, as well as put others at ease in front of cameras
Expert proficiency in photography-related software
In-depth knowledge of the creative process in order to effectively gauge workloads and manage deadlines
Excellent organization and communication skills
A proactive approach to problem-solving
Unwavering attention to detail and deadlines
Ability to multitask between small and large-scale projects in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented atmosphere
Collaborative spirit and excellent people skills
Ability to communicate ideas to colleagues and clients in an articulate, professional manner
Ability to take direction and work in a creative team environment, as well as work on projects independently
Minimum Required Experience
Bachelor’s degree in photography, photojournalism, or equivalent experience.
Two or more (2 ) years of photography experience at a multi-faceted, fast-paced organization
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in higher education, preferably at a large, residential, flagship university
Experience working in a newsroom environment
Experience in developing multi-faceted project plans, as well as implementing them
