Position Summary
The Director: Compute, Storage, & DBA Services is globally responsible for consolidating, operating and driving the continuous evolution and improvement of UA’s enterprise private / public / hybrid cloud, data center and storage technologies. This role leads UA’s Cloud and Infrastructure strategy, helps drive our transition to cloud, leads portfolio projects, budgets, and ultimately ensures that service delivery is timely, on budget, and of maximum quality. This role leads all Infrastructure technologies served from UA data centers, from multiple cloud providers, and network hubs, collaborating with core network services. The role also has responsibility for disaster recovery and infrastructure security, regulations and privacy (including Mainland China). It requires a transformational leader who partners with multiple business and application owners / stakeholders and is a key role in UA’s digital transformation.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Lead the strategy, design and deployment of UA’s global multi-cloud infrastructure, including compute, storage, database and core network services to support UA’s progressive migration to cloud-based applications. These include a portfolio of technology solutions that includes: AWS (EC2, S3, etc.), AWS-China, Dropbox, O365, Dell, Nasuni, Citrix, Netscaler, Infoblox. This critical foundational suite supports SAP FMS, Active Omni, China Retail Pro, MMF and other delivery applications that are integral to UA’s Supply Chain / Distribution, Product Marketing / GTM and Retail environments.
Lead a consistent, measurable process to operationalize and scale cloud based critical initiatives and execution. Leads Under Armour’s disaster recovery planning / testing, which supports UA’s business continuity requirements.
Establish key performance indicators and metrics (e.g. capacity, availability, budget, and inventory, velocity) for technology operations (e.g. SLA’s, security, response times, etc.) demonstrating operational health. Communicate through operational reviews. Measure and track against operational commitments.
Lead a distributed team of 68 individuals responsible for running a 24x7x365 Cloud, Infrastructure and Operations organization with staff located in multiple global locations; additionally, effectively lead and manage performance of off-shore delivery partners. Develop, recruit, and mentor a core team of top performers, inspiring and supporting them to do their best work.
Partners closely with business leaders in Supply Chain, Retail and Engineering, as all IT-dependent initiatives require this organization’s design, delivery and operational support. Solutioning is complex and the critical nature of these technologies requires close alignment, relationship management and a ‘co-development’ mindset from this Leader.
Effectively manages annual budget of /- $8M. Owns development of business cases/justification to obtain project funding and support from business stakeholders. In addition, partners with business stakeholders to develop solution, articulate compelling business value, and gain Investment Committee sponsorship for transformational initiatives.
Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities)
Manages direct annual budget of /- $8M. Also accountable for advising/managing Compute / Storage costs in other departments – additional estimated $2M.
Manages large-scale, globally-impacting IT infrastructure projects affecting data centers, multiple cloud instances, core network services, and handling of all UA’s corporate, financial, product, athlete and teammate data.
This role designs/creates, implements and operationally supports all technologies in scope.
This role requires very little supervision, as it is a leadership role. It must participate as a leader across towers and across businesses.
Every element of Under Armour’s transactional Information Technology systems that serve customers, athletes, teammates and other external stakeholders depends upon the technologies this Role architects, leads, operates and supports. Every business feature and capability that delivers value is dependent upon this set of technologies and the Leader who guides their evolution and performance. This is a role that is highly accountable and has a VERY high degree of impact across UA by delivering complex enabling technical solutions that truly have a ‘zero downtime’ service level expectation.
This role ‘owns’ the strategy and development of technologies; it defines new and unique procedures and policies.
This role is broad and is critically important to the delivery of all other applications, capabilities and business value. It is accountable for an array of related, complex technologies which must be well-orchestrated. This role is also highly cross-functional; as a critical foundational technology suite, it must develop roadmaps and plan in concert with business stakeholders and other Technology owners.
This role regularly (daily / weekly) interacts with all other Technology towers; with Distribution House leaders; with Global Regional IT and business teams; with technology suppliers; while also managing delivery through internal teammates and UA’s offshore delivery partner.
As a Leadership role, this position must collaborate and work cross-functionally with many stakeholders; this collaboration is often negotiating, influencing, and matrix-managing the actions and performance of individuals not under direct management.
UA Teams generally have shared interests and a common goal. There are often several ways / methods to accomplish the goal; this Leader must give/take and negotiate. Success requires developing and sustaining strong and trusting relationships.
The role currently has 4 direct FTEs reporting to it, leading 5 ‘indirect’ teams – totaling 64 indirect teammates. This role leads each of the teams / technology areas: the FTEs ‘design / build’ and their operational teams ‘implement / run.’
This role continually provides guidance, coaching, mentorship to both direct and indirect teammates across multiple job areas.
This role requires expertise and management proficiency across a broad technical array:
Traditional data center computing architectures;
Global multi-cloud computing architectures;
Private, public and hybrid cloud storage technologies, including an ability to evaluate which storage option is appropriate to business use based upon document management governance;
O365; messaging services; Active Directory;
DNS / DHCP; load balancing; IP management
Virtual desktop technology
Database Services

Bachelor’s Degree
7-10 Years successfully managing multi-regional, hybrid data center, cloud, & core database services.
