Software Engineer

Profile

Squaremouth is looking for an innovative and motivated developer who wants to gain a deep understanding of the company's architecture to move several new company initiatives forward.

This position requires work from the company’s downtown Fort Wayne office, so the candidate must be within commuting distance. We are looking for a team player who can work with a group of overachievers in a highly collaborative environment. They will teach themselves, learn from others, and take ownership of their successes and challenges. The ideal candidate should have an intrinsic desire for personal growth and professional success.

Squaremouth’s applications are written using the Ruby on Rails web framework. Candidates will write Ruby and incorporate dynamic behavior with JavaScript as appropriate. As with any web application, they’ll need to build HTML/CSS and integrate with backend databases.

Every person spends time troubleshooting bugs, reviewing other people's code, supporting customer service while on-call, and deploying updates to production. This allows all of our developers the opportunity to understand our entire system from beginning to end.

The Squaremouth team promotes a collaborative environment using industry best practices such as daily standup meetings, code reviews, and pair programming. Peer critiques and constructive criticism allows the development team to grow and learn at a fast pace.

Responsibilities

Writing Ruby, JavaScript, SQL, and CSS to add new functionality to our application

Exploring new languages, frameworks, and other technologies to improve development processes

Using automated testing with continuous integration to validate the functionality of the code you write

Participating in code reviews and providing feedback to other members of the team

Mentoring our other developers on development best practices

Receiving coaching and training from our other developers

Autonomously lead larger projects to improve our website and administrative backend

Required Skills and Experience

Ability to work independently, arranging your work to meet deadlines

Experience in web application development (Ruby on Rails experience not required)

Passion for growing your skills, tackling interesting work, and challenging problems

Energetic, positive attitude

Ability to work within a team, collaborate on projects, and share responsibility

Bonus Skills

Experience building web applications using Ruby

Comfortable administering Linux based servers

Experience building GraphQL API endpoints

Knowledgeable about Docker images and containers

Familiarity with automated server configuration

Exposure to programming with GoLang or PHP
